How to become a professional miner?

In this article we will explain how is it possible to become a full-time minor. We have received several questions about Daniel’s situation, and explanations were needed.

How to become a full-time miner?

Nico resides in France while Daniel No. The country in which you reside is the most important factor to take into account. Nico has a job outside of mining in France and the mining allows him to have a monthly supplementary income. It is possible technically speaking to become a full-time miner in France but it requires a significant investment for a profit that is not very interesting with the current profitability and above all the risks are important. I (Daniel) always say that mining in France is interesting to make a complementary income but to be able to live France is not at all the best place to do it because of the following reasons:

  • The cost in kwh, the French average is about $0.17 (dollars) per kwh, being a full-time minor it is possible to decrease this rate, it is possible and even proposed by the electric suppliers. You should also not neglect the monthly or annual subscription imposed by your electrical supplier who incur charges as well.
  • The increase of the kVa (maximum watts that your installation can withstand) is necessary if you want a mining farm and hope to live it. An apartment or even a local will not be enough just like a house. The increase in KVA is very expensive, to give you an example an apartment usually has 6 KVA available, it is possible to increase this KVA to 9 KVA (theoretical increase) by paying more expensive by a simple call to your electric supplier (EDF/others) . The most important problem arises when you need to change your electrical installation, you have to know that EDF for example is a power supplier but it is the electrical network Manager (example Enedis) that intervenes to perform Changes like for example the increase of the physical kVa (the cabling) and the cost is important in France but I do not know the tariffs.
  • The creation of a society, by doing things legally, it is necessary to create a society there is no choice. The creation of a company thus generates costs, I will not go into detail about things I do not know about France.
  • Taxes, in France you have to pay a tax for all the gains you make from the moment you withdraw in FIAT (real money) from your trading platform. An article will be made on this subject by a lawyer.
  • The ventilation system is something to take into account when you have a large number of RIGs and each case will be different regarding this. The best ventilation system that does not incur any cost is the natural ventilation but unfortunately not available for everyone. The fans do not cool the room but only the graphics cards, the air conditioning consumes a lot of Watts for in the end not much. Air extractors have a significant cost and also require a large flow rate to absorb the hot air from the room. The watercooling useless to talk about it, its cost is astronomical.

It should also be held that legally in France, it is not necessary to declare its earnings to taxes when you have earnings less than €300 per year, ie nothing at all, I do not know if this rule has changed but I do not think. A single 6-card RIG exceeds €300 of annual earnings, does everyone report this to taxes? I doubt it. I will not comment on the legality, I believe that every person is an adult and must know what to do about this, it is obvious that in France, as soon as you make money, it is taxable and I will not address the Money laundering Solutions. I have touched on the above points concerning France, know that it is the same in different countries with a few differences such as Canada for example or I am familiar with a mining farm located at the bottom.

  • The cost per kWh is $0.07 (dollars).
  • Increase in kVa, necessary if you want a mining farm.
  • Creation of a company, obligatory by being legal.
  • Taxes, Canadians also pay taxes on crypt-currencies.
  • The ventilation system depends on each case.

For Belgium, the cost to KW is €0.22 per kWh, it depends on the regions, on the other hand there is no tax linked to the Cryptos-currencies in Belgium.

How’s it going today for the full-time miners?

I will explain my case it will be easier to understand the difference compared to France. Know that I am far from being the only one in this situation.

  • The cost to kwh, it is $0.05 (dollars) per kwh and there is no monthly or yearly subscription, I pay only what I consume.
  • The increase in kVa, I immediately carried out a custom electrical installation, ie that is not connected to my home/apartment/local. The cost was €8 per KW extra, ie not much.
  • The creation of a society, unnecessary where I reside, is not necessary.
  • Taxes, no tax is imposed where I reside, as in Belgium for example.
  • The ventilation system, my RIGs are all “cooled” by natural aeration and during the summer, some fans push the hot air of the room (s) directly out.

What is important to remember is what I said at the beginning: Mining in France is very good for having a complementary income but too risky/complicated to live completely full time.

What type of farm do I need to live mining in France?

Complicated Question, complicated answer because there are several possibilities that depend on the purchase price of your equipment and your skills. I do not recommend doing this in France, the mining industry is constantly evolving and we have to adapt continuously. (ASIC, New generation of GPU’s, etc.). Each case is different, there may be other charges listed below to subtract in + such as renting a warehouse/local/house to take into account.

Beginner Option, easy to set up, easy to manage:

Warning: Beginner does not mean that everyone can do it easily, a mining farm of a quantity of 120 graphics cards it’s huge. The ease of setting up means that Windows is easy to install on each RIG, the configurations also for a minor who already knows all this. It is not easy to make a mining farm containing 20 RIGs, I would like to clarify. With today’s current profitability when writing these lines, I think it takes minimum 20 RIGs of 6 graphics cards Nvidia GTX 1060:

  • 120 graphics cards
  • 13000 Watts
  • Approximate Hahsrate of 36000 H/s on crypts-currencies of the Equihash algorithm
  • Very approximate income of $4400 (dollars) per gross month.

Perfect Solution for Beginners But when you want to do a full-time mining farm, I think you have to be more than “beginner”. The charges to be withdrawn:

  • Electricity, at $0.17 (dollars) per kWh This corresponds to $1600 of electrical cost so $4400-$1600 = $2800
  • Taxes
  • Expenses related to the company
  • The ventilation systems to be added to the electrical consumption.
  • The fee (= commissions) of the various mining software, mining pool, exchange platform.
  • Security to avoid burglaries.

I do not know the NET total per month but it certainly corresponds to the French minimum wage very definitely without counting all the risks related to the world of Cryptos-currencies or security physically speaking in France (burglary) and investment in the Security is necessary and this is an extra charge.

Intermediate Option, longer to set up, higher profitability:

With today’s current profitability when writing these lines, I think it takes minimum 16 RIGs of 6 graphics cards AMD RX 580:

  • 96 Graphics Cards
  • 13600 Watts
  • Approximate Hashrate of 2880 MH/s on crypts-currencies of the Ethash/Dagger-Hashimoto algorithm
  • Hashrate of 307 MH/s on crypt-currencies of the LYRA2Z algorithm and reduced power consumption compared to Ethash.
  • Very approximate income of $4450 (dollars) per month gross via the crypt-currencies of the algorithm Ethash/Dagger-Hashimoto.
  • Very approximate income of $5300 (dollars) per month gross on the Zcoin of the algorithm Lyra2z, this income is possible to be increased via other cryptos-currencies of this algorithm. (But low exchange volume)

Perfect Solution for minors who know much more in the field of mining, Linux, change of BIOS and optimizations (overclocking/underclocking). The charges to be withdrawn:

  • Electricity, at $0.17 (dollars) per kWh This corresponds to $1660 of electrical cost so $4456-$1660 = $2796 (Ethereum)
  • Taxes
  • Expenses related to the company
  • The ventilation systems to be added to the electrical consumption.
  • The fee (= commissions) of the various mining software, mining pool, exchange platform.
  • Security to avoid burglaries.

Same thing as for an Nvidia farm, I ignore the NET total per month.

Expert Option, long to set up, superior profitability:

With today’s current profitability when writing these lines, I think it takes minimum 6 RIGs of 6 graphics cards AMD VEGA 64:

  • 36 Graphics Cards
  • I don’t know the exact consumption, let’s take 200w per card = 7200 Watts
  • Approximate Hahsrate of 234 MH/s on crypts-currencies of the LYRA2Z algorithm
  • Very approximate income of $4430 (dollars) per month gross via the Cryptos-currencies of the LYRA2Z algorithm. (Zcoin)

Perfect Solution for those who do not have much room, sufficient ventilation and sufficient knowledge (Linux), BIOS change, overclocking optimizations/underclocking. The charges to be withdrawn:

  • Electricity, at $0.17 (dollars) per kWh This corresponds to $880 of electrical cost so $4430-$880 = $3550 (Zcoin)
  • Taxes
  • Expenses related to the company
  • The ventilation systems to be added to the electrical consumption.
  • The fee (= commissions) of the various mining software, mining pool, exchange platform.
  • Security to avoid burglaries.

Same thing as for Nvidia and RX 580, I ignore the NET total per month. I do not know the exact consumption, so it may be possible to take only 5 RIGs instead of 6 RIGs. Also tell you that the result displayed by what to Mine, Crypto-coin or any other profitability comparator will always be distorted so always remove minimum 15%.
